How to share a map

Sharing is the last step of a short journey: build the map, save it, then publish a link. Anyone you send the link to opens your map read-only in a browser, with no account and nothing to install.

This hasn't reached the iOS app yet. The web app has it today, in any browser.

Step by step

Pick the app you're using

The web app and the mobile app don't always work the same way, so each has its own instructions.

  1. Set the map up the way you want it seen.

Turn on the layers you want and move the map to the area you care about.

  2. In the toolbar, click My Maps, then click Save current as New Map.

Only a saved map can be shared, so this comes first if you are still in the Sandbox.

  3. Type a name and click Save.

The map is yours from now on, and it keeps saving itself as you work.

  4. Open My Maps again and click Share on the map's row.

The share settings open. If you have shared this map before, the button reads Edit and the link already exists.

  5. Click Publish — create the link.

Viewers see the version you publish, so later edits stay private until you publish again.

  6. Click Copy next to the link.

Paste it into an email or a message — this is the only link this share will ever have.

  7. Open the link to see exactly what your recipient sees.

It opens in any browser with no account and no sign-in: your map, read-only, at the area you saved.

Saving is covered on its own at How to save a map and open it again, including reopening a map later and what the free plan can do. Once the link exists, How to choose what a shared map shows picks which layers, parcels and drawings ride on it, and How to password-protect a shared map puts a password in front of it.

Good to know

Worth knowing before you start

  • Plans

Saving maps needs a paid plan, and only a saved map can be shared. On the free plan the save option reads Upgrade your plan to save maps.

  • Share from your phone

The mobile app can open shared maps but cannot create a share yet. Share the map from the web app, then send the link from anywhere.

  • One link, and you stay in control

A share has a single link. Reopen Edit on the map's row at any time to change what it shows, or to take it down with Unpublish this map.
